Might Makes Right

In sum, the lies, misleading, and the misinformation starting from about twenty or thirty years ago on the part of the neoconservative and neoliberal elite of the United States has led to two major socioeconomic and sociopolitical conditions that have implications with a global scale. For one, the credibility and legitimacy of the American elite is now down the drain, both in terms of domestic opinion and in terms of global opinion. And in terms of power – which amounts to swaying the thoughts and actions of people – credibility and legitimacy is everything. Second, the lies, misleading, and misinformation of the neoconservative and neoliberal elite coincided with the erosion of international rules and norms which has now resulted in the global balance of power tilting in favor of Russia and China.

Thus, when China sends fighter jets over Taiwan or when Russia intimidates Ukraine, the issue of credibility and legitimacy means that Russia and China can simply bring up Afghanistan and the Middle East as a justification for their actions and policies. Also, the utter disregard of international rules and norms on the part of America’s neoconservative and neoliberal elite when it came to Afghanistan and the Middle East means that Russia and China will also conform to the prevailing notion of “might makes right” in regards to their own actions and policies. The creation of international rules and norms after World War II was intended to delegitimize and discredit actions and policies which conform to the notion that “might makes right.” However, with the erosion of international rules and norms due to the actions and rhetoric of America’s neoconservative and neoliberal elite, the floodgates for archaic and pre-modern actions and policies – and thus anarchy and chaos – are now open to a large extent.

Thus, if international rules and norms do not apply to America’s neoconservative and neoliberal elite, then why should the same rules and norms apply to everyone else? What makes a handful of decrepit and deformed people in America’s neoconservative and neoliberal elite an exception to the rules and norms of the international community and international society? Moreover, where is the credibility and legitimacy needed for the neoconservative and neoliberal elite of the United States to compel Russia, China, Iran, the Taliban, or North Korea to conform to international rules and norms, especially after their countless violations of international rules and norms? Detailing and listing all of the violations of international rules and norms on the part of America’s neoconservative and neoliberal elite in this essay – in addition to detailing and listing all of their lies and misinformation – would simply be too much for one essay.

Also, the institutions of the international community or international society, such as the United Nations, the International Criminal Court (ICC), and others are too concerned with money in order to address and hold to account those who were the impetus and source of the breakdown of international rules and norms starting from about twenty or thirty years ago. Now, with the breakdown of international rules and norms, the international community and international society is essentially a free-for-all, amounting to the “survival of the fittest.” Thus, the international system is very much in an anarchic and chaotic state which international rules and norms are aimed at preventing, thus leading to uncertainty and volatility.
