Lesson of the Day

With Europe mired in social strife and war in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt decided to share this poem with Britain’s beleaguered wartime leader, Sir Winston Churchill, in order to boost his morale and sense of hope. Such imagery and allusions to sunlight, albeit imagery and allusions, can make a monumental difference in even the most dire circumstances. As the Sufi mystic and scholar Abdul Qadir al-Jilani said: “Hope is the money given on loan by happiness.”
