Teaching has two components: education and pedagogy. The distinction between education on one hand and pedagogy on the other hand was something I was made aware of as a college student by one very excellent history professor named Benedict Carton. The value and meaning of that distinction is something that I grew to appreciate many years later.
Education comes from the Latin root word educere, which means “to bring out.” On the other hand, pedagogy comes from the Greek word paidagōgos which means “to lead young boys.” Thus, teaching has a dual effect, in the sense that it “brings out” and puts in at the same time, hence, the inputs and outputs as in any other science.
