“The Closing of the American Mind” by Allan Bloom. This book very much demonstrates that Bloom — who was one of America’s premier but largely under-appreciated public philosophers and intellectuals of the 20th century — believed in a “Hierarchy of Knowledge,” with book knowledge and data serving as the springboard or stepping stone for a higher form of knowledge and truth that can only be found in philosophy and religion. Knowledge and truth ultimately shape one’s reality, and in philosophy and religion, one finds the ultimate and final piece of knowledge and truth which no other piece of knowledge and truth can supersede or surpass.
