“Sex and Character” by Otto Weininger. Perhaps the best and most scientific book on love, marriage, and sexuality that one can ever find in the Western oeuvre, aside from, of course, Freud and Foucault’s work on the issue of love and sexuality. Weininger, an Austrian-Jew during the famous Fin de Siècle period of European history, brought both disapproval and ostracism upon himself because of his views on love and sexuality from both his own racial and religious community as well as from the broader European society during his time. Undoubtedly a genius and an intellectual giant in his own right, Weininger nevertheless committed suicide at the tender age of 23, largely because of the pressures which came from the stigma placed on him as a result of the general and widespread failure to comprehend and understand his unparalleled and unmatched level of genius and intellect. In turn, the general and widespread failure to comprehend and understand Weininger stems from a more basic defect and flaw, namely, the failure to comprehend and understand the centrality of issues such as monogamy and sexual attraction in the bigger scheme of things.
