“Qarz” can also refer to borrowing. Thus, the word “Qarz” can refer to both borrowing and debt.

As a result, the previously mentioned Afghan proverb can be stated in one of either two ways. It can either be stated as: “Once the debt gets out of control, have a chicken palaw.” Or, it can be stated as: “Once the borrowing gets out of control, have a chicken palaw.”

Thought you might be interested in this little nuance, given that it’s also highly relevant to what we are dealing with at the moment.
