“A Discourse on Inequality” by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The main idea behind this work — which is considered by a number of scholars and thinkers to be Rousseau’s most important work — is that the growth of a civilization and the luxury and material wealth accumulated through the course of the advancement of a civilization means Modern Man continues to deviate farther and farther away from his “Natural State,” known as “Fitra” in the Islamic tradition. Rousseau speculated on this “Natural State” or “Fitra,” and considers inter alia the possibility of Modern Man ever being able to attain such a state.
