And given our most basic and fundamental dilemma and predicament – namely, the broader contradiction between political and social realities on one hand and our creative and imaginative or “Dionysian” drive and impulse on the other hand – our salvation can only come as a result of God bestowing his favor on us. To borrow from one Romantic writer: “To whom God grants his greatest favor/He sends into the wide, wide world,/And shows him all his many wonders/In rock, in wood, in stream and field.”
