But above all else, perhaps the most important point to make about the issue of occupation is that no occupation lasts forever. At least this is what we can conclude and infer from previous occupations such as Rome, Greece, Persia, the Arabs, the Ottomans, the British, French, Dutch, Germans, Japanese, Soviets, and now the Americans. And all these occupying forces underwent internal decline before the collapse of their occupations. Debt is the trigger for imperial collapse. Debt sets in before all the other indicators and signs of imperial collapse. And as we see now, American debt is through the roof. It is therefore not a coincidence that Afghanistan, Ukraine, and now the Middle East and soon after Asia has been and is drawing America into one dilemma after another. It is because the first and foremost indicator or sign of imperial collapse – namely, debt – has set in for the United States. “Dilemmas of Dominance” to borrow from Chomsky.
