The essential point to be made about international politics and international relations is that everyone is on their own. Self-help. Even if Washington went around “helping” other countries all these years, no one will help Washington as it deals with monumental problems for the foreseeable future. Afghanistan and Iraq was the right hook, Ukraine was the jab, the Middle East today is the uppercut, and China’s next move in East Asia will be the haymaker. The effects of which are compounded by domestic politics in the United States. Empire and occupation failed, and Washington is now in a chokehold. How does one get out of a chokehold? That’s the question which Washington should be answering and thinking about now.
