And if history is deterministic, in the sense that history is predestined, what gives history its deterministic character and essence, arguably, is class. Individuals are determined and shaped by their “structural location” to borrow from Vivek Chibber. And structure is based on class. It follows that “the pressure emanating from the capitalist’s structural location exercises its own discipline on him — whether he is Hindu, Muslim, Confucian, or Protestant.” He added: “Whatever his prior socialization, he quickly learns that he will have to conform to the rules attached to his location or his establishment will be driven under.”
