Each class also seems to have its own philosophy and mental constitution. As Arendt highlighted, the bourgeoisie – in contrast to the middle and working classes – have the belief in never-ending expansion at the heart of their philosophy. In turn, never-ending expansion leads to power, and as Foucault argued, power is repressive by its very nature. It follows that the bourgeoisie is the most sexually repressed class. But there is a paradox at the heart of “The Repressive Hypothesis” of Foucault as well, which is that bourgeoisie repression also leads to a multiplicity or plurality of sexual manifestations. And this multiplicity or plurality of sexual manifestations can only spread. Hence, another paradox, which is that bourgeoisie repression – which one should note is at the heart of everything in our social world – has made the bourgeoisie epoch both the most repressed social epoch and the least repressed social epoch in history, in comparison and contrast to the nomadic and feudal epochs which preceded it.
