Mental health, the lowering of birth rates in the West, which one can argue are the two issues which demand our attention the most from an economic and social perspective, are all connected to this very fundamental and rudimentary issue of love. But to an extent, when we treat someone through psychoanalysis, we have to withhold our love for the patient or subject. When transference occurs between patient and doctor or subject and teacher, the love develops. But then a withholding of that love has to occur as well on the part of the doctor or teacher. Part of this whole process, given that energy healing and love is a process above all else, is transference. Transference is perhaps the name of the game. Transference is the most important part of this whole psychoanalytical healing process. And transference amounts to a projection of erotic and sensual feelings between patient and doctor or subject and teacher. Both sides project it onto one another. But then of course for ethical and industrial reasons, the feelings and emotions have to be withheld as well. So it is all a delicate balancing act. It is complicated. But both are needed. One needs both transference and withdrawal in order to get good and healthy results and outcomes. There are also two sides to the overall transference coin. While one side of it consists of the projection of erotic and sensual feelings and emotions, the other side can be turbulent and rough as well. It can consist of anger and frustration as well. Hence, the challenge which is at the heart of psychoanalysis and healing and therapy.
