The scholarly or technical term for the seizure of the state’s surplus by private elites is “state capture.” The usual idealistic blabber we hear about “freedom” and “democracy” and so on and so forth is actually a diversion and a distraction from none other than state capture by private elites. But through state capture, private elites put the middle class in a dilemma or predicament, in the sense that private elites compel or force upper middle class entrepreneurs and small businesses and small capitalists to gravitate towards the private elites. While both the state and the working class get exploited and gutted by private elites, the middle class and the upper middle class are compelled and forced to gravitate towards private elites, and this is exactly the kind of scenario or situation which private elites want.
