One Cold War expert raised a very important and interesting question, which I must admit has crossed my own mind on a number of occasions: Why can’t the United States ever get along with popular nationalist and revolutionary leaders, yet it always seems to get along with counterrevolutionary elite types? The answer, in short, is capitalistic expansionism. Counterrevolutionary elite types in the Third World kowtow to American capitalistic expansion, whereas popular nationalist and revolutionary leaders express concern over foreign control of their countries and societies and in turn express concern over the decline of economic and social conditions and circumstances which arise as a result of foreign control of their countries. It is perhaps that simple when it comes to explaining why America never seems to get along with popular nationalist and revolutionary leaders while warmly embracing counterrevolutionary elite types.
