The most classic case of states choosing to balance as opposed to bandwagon is when the Allied powers decided to put their differences aside in order to deal with Nazi Germany’s pursuit of global hegemony in the 20th century. The latest case of states choosing to balance as opposed to bandwagon was when America decided to invade and occupy Afghanistan and the Middle East in the 21st century. It all demonstrates that when faced between the choice of bandwagoning with a major power that seeks global hegemony or balancing with smaller powers to contain the hegemonic power, states will choose to balance against the hegemonic power rather than bandwagon with it.
