In sum, both Iran and Afghanistan “signaled a shift in Third World opposition to superpower domination” to borrow from one scholar. And from that point forward, from the Iranian revolution to the rise of the Taliban and onward, the “dangers” of American intervention in the Third World as a whole became “plain to see.” And to make matters worse, Khomeini said: “There could be no mutual understanding between a Muslim nation and a non-Muslim government.”
