We had to also resurrect American culture and define vital interests in order to resurrect the state. At the heart of culture is the liberal arts and humanities. Decades of neoliberalism alienated Americans from the liberal arts and humanities and their vital interests, thus undermining the American state. The pillars of the state are culture and vital interests. This is the case for all states in the international system. Neoliberalism undermined all of it. Neoliberalism eroded the basic pillars of the American state. So what we had to do was resurrect American culture and define vital interests in order to resurrect the state. Which is what we did. Or at least we tried.
