Afghanistan, Summer 2003

They say Afghanistan isn’t the problem. It’s beautiful and rich with history. The problem is the Afghans.
I still don’t really know what I’m doing in all honesty.
“Shah e Du Shamshera” is a shrine in the center of Kabul dedicated to an Arab fighter who invaded Afghanistan in the 7th century and successfully converted all of Afghanistan to Islam with his forces. Kabul was largely Hindu before this man invaded with his forces and converted it to Islam in the 7th century. “Shah e Du Shamshera” means “The two-sworded king” in Farsi.
Salang is in the northeast of Afghanistan, out into the country. It was sweet. I tasted it. Sweetwater. And the sound of the stream put me to sleep like a baby. Heaven on earth.
Red mountain, with a blue sky backdrop in Salang. As the Moghul king Babur said, if there is any heaven on earth to be found, it’s this. It’s this. It’s this.
Enjoy the ride. Bon voyage.
