We can perhaps understand the present as a result of the founding, and the founding as a result of the present. “Proclamation of Neutrality” and the “Farewell Address” of George Washington, for instance – and one should note he gave a farewell after having been begged to stay on for life – made the avoidance of foreign entanglements both the essence of American political cognition and thinking and the basic approach America needed to take towards the outside world. It all goes back to the founding. And as we mentioned before, there was a religious impetus to the founding as well. And it had nothing to do with Christians or evangelicals.
