DC-Area Food Recommendation, February 8, 2025

“Desi Breakfast Club” located again in my backyard of Chantilly, Virginia. I have a lot of nice places to visit just in my own backyard. It is the twin restaurant of a Pakistani lunch and dinner place nearby. In South Asian culture, breakfast is known as “nashtayee” and it really sets the entire tone and tenor and mood of the rest of the day, especially on weekends. I am very big on the ‘Nehari’ (beef and gravy) and ‘Haleem’ (ground chicken and wheat and barley and lentils and a bunch of spices). But out of the two, Haleem is of sentimental value. There are variations of ‘Haleem’ – Iranian, Afghan, Pakistani – but the Pakistani variation is packed with color and spices. It takes me back all the way to when I was a school kid, when I would visit my Pakistani Quran teacher and she would have it ready either before or after the class. Try both ‘Nehari’ and ‘Haleem’ if you haven’t already. It is therapeutic. The ‘Heart of Asia’ food is something else. On another level. In a league of its own.
