Fifth Note to “Hidden Gems, Northern Virginia”

I bought this beauty from a random and hidden storekeeper in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. But I’ll give you the brief rundown on how the bargaining and negotiation over it went down: I saw it as I was strolling along, I stopped, I went up to the storekeeper and I said how much? Where are you gonna find this in America? There was no price tag on it. He gave a price. I assessed how much I had on me at that moment and then I gave a counteroffer. He wouldn’t budge that much. He didn’t even budge at all after the initial counteroffer. He was very rude and stubborn. He didn’t even seem to really want to sell it. He didn’t even care that I wanted to buy it. It was as if he wanted to scare me off. But then I gave him what he asked for after bringing the price down just by a little bit because I was in no mood to walk away from it. I accepted the one and only counteroffer he gave to my counteroffer to his initial offer. And now looking back, I’d probably give more than what he asked for in the end just to have it. The divide between the new world and the old world, all in one image. And perhaps based on this little anecdote or story, you can see how all the various laws of the market we just mentioned applied to it.
