Shamal, junoob, sharq, gharb. North, south, east, west respectively. ‘Shamali’ thus refers to the North but the Northeast to be very specific. Just as there’s the “Liberal Northeast” in America, there’s the liberal northeast in Afghanistan as well: “Shamali.”
