“Stuck: How the Privileged and the Propertied Broke the Engine of American Opportunity” by Yoni Appelbaum. Appelbaum is a journalist for the famous ‘Atlantic’ Magazine. And his core argument is quite interesting, which is that getting ahead in life involves two basic things, namely, mobility and mingling. Being able to move to where you want to move instead of being stuck where you are and engaging with like-minded people in a community that would enable you to thrive. But as Appelbaum argues, instead of mobility and mingling, many Americans are now stuck and isolated because the privileged and propertied have put up increasing barriers to entry around places and communities where economic and social opportunities are largely concentrated. And these stuck and isolated Americans were in fact the impetus behind Donald Trump’s election both in 2016 and 2024. And who knows what happened in 2020 in all honesty. Those who were able to move to where they wanted to move all these years and were enmeshed in a community of like-minded people were likely to vote against Trump, whereas those who were stuck and isolated and could not overcome the various barriers to entry in places and communities where economic and social opportunity were largely concentrated voted overwhelmingly for Trump. Quite a fascinating argument, but one which is entirely valid and true and can be corroborated by personal experience and inquiry.
