Northern Virginia Food Spots, May 10, 2025

“B Side” – located in the ‘Mosaic District’ in Fairfax, Virginia. Right up the road from where I am. The historic “Route 29” – formerly known as Lee Highway – connects my neighbourhood to this place. Off of Route 29 near my house is where the first battle of the American civil war took place in a field called ‘Bull Run.’ ‘Mosaic District’ is in all honesty one of the few major public gathering spots in this area. Of course, we have more shopping centres than we can account for. We have a bunch of crappy parks too. But in terms of major public gathering spots, we have the Mosaic District when you go east towards DC from where I am, then it’s Tyson’s Corner, then Falls Church, then Arlington, then Old Town Alexandria, and then of course DC itself with all its various neighbourhoods. And coincidentally, the DC-Metro Area is only the seventh-largest metro area in the United States, after New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Miami in that particular order. My focus has been largely local as of late for a number of reasons, but I feel as though I’m beginning to exhaust my choices and options. I have to begin looking out into the world more. But “B Side” is considered by the Washington Post to have the second-best burger in the DC-Metro Area. The first is a place called “Steezeburger” in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It is known as the “OG Vinyl Bar.” For those who aren’t fluent in slang like I am, OG stands for ‘original gangster.’ It is what it is. I guess that’s what I am. I’ve been called a mafioso as well. It’s definitely my kind of place, considering how they’ve made music the core and focus and spirit and soul of the place aside from what I believe will be really good food.
So here’s the food menu. I narrowed my choices down to the fried chicken sandwich with smoked jalapeño jam, Alabama sauce, lettuce, pickles, and beef fat fries alongside what is of course the Chicago-inspired Italian Beef sandwich (braised chuck beef, giardiniera – which is a combination of pickled veggies – and beef jus on a hoagie roll. I’m going with the Chicago-inspired Italian Beef with a small side of Caesar salad. Someone else can have the fried chicken sandwich. The review is of course next. And I’ll have the burger some other time.
