Ahmad Zahir was the voice of Afghanistan’s liberal golden age during the 1960’s and 1970’s. But when he reached his early thirties, the Soviets took over! And he wasn’t happy about it. So he sang this song in response to the political and social climate of the country at that time. And then of course, everything went downhill after that for Afghanistan. Even songs have stories behind them.
