From a libidinal standpoint, and the libidinal standpoint is perhaps everything, what is happening is that the libido becomes alienated from both the self and its desires and the irrationality and repression of the external world. And when this happens, when the libido is alienated from both the self and its desires and the irrationality and repression of the external world, there are then two possible results or outcomes. For one, the libido is either introverted into neurosis. Or two, the libido is sublimated through education and sex into refined taste. Hence, the existentialists and their argument that anxiety is at the heart of everything. Anxiety is then explained by either sinfulness or sexual repression. Therefore, the libido had to overcome all odds as well as a very dire situation of systemic collapse as a result of insurmountable debt and dysfunction to sublimate itself and to avoid introversion and thus neurosis.
