Dionysus is a mythological figure and god, which then makes him a symbol for something, namely, absolute freedom over repression. All the Greek gods symbolized some sort of natural or social force or phenomena. And what Dionysus represented was absolute freedom over repression. His wine, therefore, or his madness and spiritual ecstasy, is the only cure and remedy.
