Queen Charlotte was also known for being very good pen pals with Queen Marie Antoinette of France, who was of course the last Queen of France before the very bloody and violent French Revolution in 1789. Queen Charlotte had made all the arrangements for the King and Queen of France to seek refuge in England, but neither made it out of France alive. Both developed a friendship but never actually met, ironically. And their friendship developed first and foremost out of their shared interest in being ardent patrons of the arts. For instance, there was no Christmas tree in England until Charlotte introduced it there. Hence, both Charlotte and Marie Antoinette had a profound interest in the arts and the humanities, and that spurred their relationship as pen pals, even though they never actually met in person.
