The actual and basic equation or formula behind government and politics is quite simple and straightforward: the minute you start having trouble justifying being in power to others, you start losing power. So in America, the minute you start failing on fulfilling what were the two core promises which got you elected, you’ll become a lame-duck president. Plain and simple. That’s all there is to it. November 2026 provides a huge shot at lame-duck status, but arguably, if it’s heading there, it means it’s there already.
