Third Note to “Prison Notebooks”

Philosophy and religion demand and require a complete and thorough detachment and divorce from the world. And nothing epitomizes and symbolizes the world more than money and sex. As the Quran states:

“Your wealth and your children are only a trial, but God – with Him is a great reward.”

It also states:

“Wealth and children are the adornment of this worldly life, but the everlasting good deeds are far better with your Lord in reward and in hope.”

Thus, the philosophical and religious experience or life amounts to a complete detachment and divorce from the life of this world as epitomized and symbolized by money and sex. But whether it is even biologically and mentally possible – especially in the West – is another question.
