When my life was a total and absolute mess as a college student and as a grad student, perhaps the best advice I got from a friend and from a professional was routine and structure: work and leisure by day, meditation and sleep by night. And with this particular and specific routine and structure, everything else began to fall into place. Preferences, tastes, hobbies, and interests all come into perspective and develop within this particular and specific routine and structure.
