As we said, the entire political and media world injected themselves into New York’s mayoral election given just how interesting and intriguing it is. But perhaps no one injected themselves into the election in a more passionate way than Donald Trump. But the way in which Trump’s intervention into the New York mayoral election culminated on election eve and the day of the election is something which we will bring into examination in this particular post.
Up until election eve and election day, Donald Trump’s intervention in the New York mayoral election consisted largely of threats of withholding money which of course no one really cared for. No one cared for it because for one, New York City is a place where Donald Trump has about a 95 percent disapproval rating. That is perhaps the biggest factor behind why Donald Trump’s intervention in New York’s mayoral election has not had the intended effect of stonewalling Zohran Mamdani’s rise.
But on election eve came Trump’s endorsement of Andrew Cuomo, which was the last thing Andrew Cuomo wanted given how Donald Trump has a 95 percent disapproval rating in New York City. And today, on election day, Trump decided to go for the “nuclear option” or rather, the final trick up not just his sleeve but anyone’s sleeve in the American mainstream, which one should note has worked in American political and social life for decades because of the neocon and neoliberal national security state which has now collapsed but doesn’t seem to work today, which is to starve and terrorize all and sundry in the name of threats and accusations of antisemitism.
And it is this particular move by Trump which we will bring into examination for the time being, given that it is the ultimate move or trick in American government and politics. And of course, there are manifold assumptions behind Trump’s statement that anyone who votes for Zohran Mamdani is a “Jew Hater.” But there are only so many assumptions to account for, just as there are so many ways in which one can approach Trump’s statement about Jew-hating.
But what I believe is important to highlight more than anything else for the time being is that for one, Jews are not a monolith, just as other groups are not a monolith. Jews are the same as any other group in my book. And another thing that is important to highlight is that many Jews were directly behind Zohran Mamdani’s rise given their perception and understanding of culture and history. There is a lot of culture and history behind not just the Jewish connection to Zohran Mamdani, but also the Jewish connection to both Marxism and Democratic-Socialism. Anyone with a brain has to ultimately reckon with both Karl Marx and the deeply Jewish connection to “Democratic Socialism.”
Karl Marx and ‘Democratic Socialism’ is the most important political and social point of view in the Modern West. Thus, the characterization of any Jew who votes for Zohran Mamdani or any Marxist-Socialist agenda as a “Jew Hater” is not only grossly misleading and sensationalist and hyberbolic, but it is also a testament to a gross ignorance, illiteracy, and denial of basic culture and history and international affairs. Arguably, Trump as an individual and personality is not as ignorant and illiterate and in denial of reality as the ignorant, illiterate, and delusional Republicans who catapulted him into power. But the mendacity, sensationalism, and hyperbole of the statement that any vote for Zohran Mamdani is an act of Jew-hating is something which we needed to deconstruct and criticize at the bare minimum. My most important mentor and idol in grad school was a Socialist Jew from Brooklyn. So I know all about deconstruction and criticism.
