Note to “Teaching Aesthetics and History”

In and of themselves, art and leisure are antithetical to the system and are opposed to everything that the system stands for. To borrow from Durkheim: “In itself, leisure is always dangerous. In serious life, man is sustained against temptation by the obligation of work. Once his regular work is done he must be able to resist these lapses; and keep busy without debasing himself.”

Busy busy busy. But of course, that leaves us with no time for contemplation and reflection. But perhaps that’s the entire point. If we don’t contemplate and reflect, we would then lose sight of the twin goals which the system has in mind for itself and for others.
