Europe went from being an architect of global order up until World War II to becoming a battleground for novel superpowers such as America, Russia, and China who seek to shape an entirely brand new order after World War II. Moreover, Europe risks greater American isolation from its affairs on one hand and as a result risks becoming a mere “appendage” of Russia, the Middle East, and Asia on the other hand. Thus, and as Kissinger noted, Europe is very much overcoming both a glorious and tragic past, only to veer towards a future that is largely uncertain and unknown.
