Europe went from carving up the world into balance of power “spheres of influence” up until World War II to getting carved up itself by America, Russia, and China after World War II. And now, Europe is in danger of getting carved up yet again based on balance of power politics between America, Russia, and China. “Keep America in and keep Russia out” is perhaps the whole-of-Europe policy goal that Brussels as well as other Western European capitals have in mind. But keeping America in and keeping Russia out is proving to be very difficult at this particular moment in time. Hence, the notion of a very uncertain and unknown future for Europe after having overcome both a glorious and tragic past.
