Gerontocracy and leaders calling out sick for mysterious reasons when in reality they were being held at gunpoint and forced to resign inter alia (sound familiar?) is all-too familiar to the Russians as a result of the Afghanistan experience. Hence, their empathy for us and in turn our ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ vis-à-vis the Russians.
