But ultimately, and arguably, our task becomes one of choosing between either the ‘materialist dialectic’ or the ‘Hegelian dialectic’ in the sense that the psyche is either an outgrowth of the material in the case of the former, or the psyche shapes the material world through the progression and synthesis of ideas in the case of the latter. If in the case of the ‘materialist dialectic’ the psyche is merely an outgrowth of the material, a change in the material world will change everything else about the world. However, if it is the progression and synthesis of ideas which changes material conditions as the Hegelian dialectic suggests, then one must become cynical and skeptical towards populist and Marxist revolution, which one should note has historically been the case in the United States or at least has been the case within the state apparatus of the United States.
