In essence, the degree of importance attached to the goal indicates the level of commitment to the goal, and the level of commitment to the goal makes the goal credible in the eyes of Moscow. But if there is no degree of importance attached to the goal as is the case now, then one’s commitment to the goal comes under question, and if one’s commitment to the goal comes under question, one’s credibility comes under question. And once one’s credibility comes under question, the adversary (Moscow) wins the conflict and war. Thus, there is a huge cost associated with not attaching importance to say, Europe or Britain, given that the act of not attaching importance to the goal in Europe or Britain not only signals a lack of commitment to the goal in Europe or Britain, but it also undermines our credibility in terms of upholding commitments to the goal anywhere else, given that commitment to the goal follows from the degree of importance we attach to the goal.
