In this business – namely, the international affairs business – you go through a very basic but significant transformation in my view. Meaning, you start off as an idealist, and then you transform into a realist. From idealism to realpolitik. And as we demonstrated, realpolitik has its own inherent or innate logic, reasoning, and science to it. And you either don’t get it, or you are compelled or made to get it. It is either or. It is ‘all or nothing.’ Either you don’t get the logic, reasoning, and science behind it, or you are compelled or made to get it. And it becomes difficult to both convince and teach others, given that you are either compelled or made to get it or you don’t get it at all.
