Moreover, the perks of an Afghan celebrity eventually ran into the civic and legal duties and obligations of an American-born citizen! I had to choose between influencing the world on behalf of my elite Afghan friends, or on behalf of my country of birth, which is America. And I chose my country of birth, namely, America. There was more at stake as an American than there was as an Afghan celebrity. Let’s put it that way. And it was hard work. Not even a second wasted when I think about it. It was as if every breath and movement of mine was controlled and influenced by some sort of rational soul or spirit from above.
