And arguably, at the core, it is very much the difference between law and order on one hand and lawlessness and “might makes right” on the other hand. We have a UN Charter borne out of a “social contract” which prohibits such behavior and prohibits exactly the wars of hegemony which are carried out under pretexts such as territorial expansionism and ethno-nationalist identity because of the experience everyone had with Hitler and the Nazis. But of course, the lawlessness and the breaking of the social contract began more than two decades ago out of Washington. What we are experiencing now is the culmination of it all. How we get out of this experience is perhaps the most important question to ask at the moment.
