Arguably, it could be as simple as the proverbial chickens coming home to roost for NATO after all their historical sins and transgressions. No one knows for sure. History is a matter of interpretation after all. Nevertheless, all we really have is history and our interpretation of it to explain the present moment. So we do our best to be accurate and objective in our explanation and interpretation of history.
