“Bel Ami” by the 19th century French novelist Guy de Maupassant. This short novel is based around the story of a regular dude who synchronistically and serendipitously gets catapulted into the world of the liberal bourgeoise and elite of French society during its imperial peak. The story is full of ups and downs, marred with one love affair and scandal after another, and can really get your blood pressure to go up. And while “Bel Ami” acts as a short fictional novel, it nonetheless serves a social function, in the sense that “Bel Ami” sheds light on the very real fact that the liberal bourgeoisie and elitist lifestyle is not necessarily an easy one.
